On staff again! This was another short-lived show by Michael Jacobs, a big shot TV producer. He said of my spec comedy script, “This isn’t bad,” and hired me as a Story Editor (low level writer, a notch above Term Writer). $2500 bucks a week and my own office at Disney. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
But, a fellow named Warren Zide, an assistant, but soon to become a manager and producer, got a comedy screenplay I wrote to ICM, a big agency. An agent read it and brought me in. They wanted to sign me as a screenwriter, comedy screenwriter.
The second agent in the room asked me if I had any other work to show. I said, I have a play, a drama, Tinseltown. That agent, Dave Wirtschafter, read that and said, “Quit your TV job. You’re a screenwriter (drama) and I’m going to make you rich.” Oooookay…
I dropped the idiot agent who was representing me and moved to ICM. I didn’t just quit, because I was scared to quit. What if this guy was bullshitting me. Wirt, as he was called got me so many meetings, that I had to quit just to meet everyone. I was Flavor of the Month.” Everyone in town wanted to meet me. In six weeks I had seven screenwriting deals in place.
I was in the movie business as a screenwriter. That’s all I ever wanted.
